That God is good, and that men are rebellious, that salvation is of the Lord, and damnation is of ourselves, are truths revealed as plain as a sunbeam. – Elder John Leland

Sermon Notes from Angier Primitive Baptist Church (8/22/10)

You have likely seen the occasional sitcom or cartoon where a character in the show is faced with a heavy moral dilemma. He must choose between right and wrong. At that moment, an angel appears on one of his shoulders and tries to convince him to do the right thing. Seconds later, a devil appears on his other shoulder to convince him to do wrong. While this imagery makes for a comical situation, the theology behind it is less than sound.
There are many popularly believed myths within Christianity. One myth in particular is especially unfortunate since it causes so many disciples of Christ to live in perpetual fear. The myth is God and Satan are always battling over our eternal souls–whoever happens to win in the end determines whether we go to heaven or hell. The fear that results is caused by the extreme uncertainty of our salvation and the bondage we feel because Satan could so easily pluck us out of the Father’s hand. I wish to prove this myth is nothing more than a myth.
Before we even examine the scriptures, consider the absence of logic in this theory. To say God and Satan fight is to imply there is a potential for Satan to win. This is a preposterous notion. How could Satan, a creation, ever defeat God, the all-powerful creator?
2 Corinthians 4:4
In whom the god of this world…First of all, the abilities of Satan, while they may be great, are strictly limited to this earth. He is “the god of this world” as opposed to the eternal world beyond. Whatever he may be capable of is limited to our lives here on earth.
Job 1:6-12
Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them. And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it. And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought? Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land. But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face. And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.Notice how Satan was forced to obtain permission from the Lord in order to do anything at all. He was also limited in his power by the restrictions God placed upon him. In the case of Job, Satan was permitted to do what he will with Job’s family and substance but he was not allowed to touch Job.
Job 2:1-6
Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD. And the LORD said unto Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it. And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause. And Satan answered the LORD, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life. But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face. And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life.Again, Satan asked for permission and again the Lord put restrictions on him. So not only is Satan limited to this earth but he also limited to what God allows. Given the eternal love we are told God has for His people throughout the Bible, it should already be clear that Satan could never have the power to steal from us our everlasting life.
I believe Satan’s sole motivation is destruction. He is a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. On one occasion, many devils possessed a man and when Jesus threatened to remove them, they pleaded to be cast into a herd of swine. The Lord granted their request. When they had relocated into the swine, they caused the herd to do nothing more than drown in water. Even so, our eternal fates cannot be touched by Satan nor can he do anything beyond what God allows.
Genesis 3:5
For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.God has never been surprised by Satan in the slightest. Even before the serpent tempted Eve to eat the forbidden fruit, the Lamb was slain (Rev. 13:8). For those saved by Christ from before the foundation of the world, He said, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” (John 14:27) How could Christ say such a thing if it were possible for one of His disciples to ever lose their eternal salvation by fault of the devil or otherwise?
The truth is it is impossible to lose what God has given. Christ was reminding us of that fact. We are told elsewhere to “set your affection on things above” (Col. 3:2) because no matter what should happen in this life, no matter what Satan may do to us, we have no reason to fear so long as we remember what is in store for us in the end.
John 19:11
Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above…While Jesus was speaking to and concerning earthly rulers like Pilate, I believe this statement is true even for the god of this world–Satan himself. Christ was victorious in saving His people from their sins and there is nothing the devil can do about it.
